Bunker Tokyo – Russian & Scandinavian Streetwear Shop Opens in Harajuku

Tokyo’s famous Harajuku neighborhood gained a new boutique with the July 14th opening of Bunker Tokyo. Bunker aims to carve out a unique niche – in a locale renowned for unique fashion – by focusing on independent up-and-coming Russian and Scandinavian streetwear designers.

Located on Cat Street in the heart of Urahara (the backstreets of Harajuku), Bunker’s interior design is – as the name hints – modeled after a Cold War era USSR nuclear bomb shelter. The concrete-walled boutique is decorated with cold war era antiques, flags, exposed pipes, and metal bars. One of the walls was hand painted during the opening weekend by Russian artist and architect Lex Gorlov.

Russian streetwear brands stocked at the opening of Bunka included Fusion, Sputnik1985, Volchok, Sovetsky1917, Ssanaya Tryapka, T3CM, and Mad Frenzy, and SoWhat?. The Danish brands Han Kjoenhavn And Twelvepieces were also included in the initial selection.

Bunker is run by the Japanese team that regularly organizes popup shops at LaForet Harajuku under the name of UGGLA. They have been importing Scandinavian street fashion into Japan for years, so we expect Bunker to eventually add brands from Iceland, Finland, Greenland, Sweden, and more. Other Eastern European countries will be represented as well, including designers from Ukraine.

With the rise of designers like Gosha Rubchinskiy and Demna Gvasalia, Japanese young people – along with others all over the world – have already embraced Eastern European streetwear. Bunker wants to give a voice to lesser-known designers from that region by making their work available inside of a bomb shelter in the world’s most famous street fashion neighborhood.
