Customisation hack will have you drinking a green tea caramel s’more, only for a limited time.
Just last week, we had the pleasure of tasting Starbucks Japan’s newest limited-time beverage: the Caramel S’more Frappucino. It was weird and wonderful, creamy and refreshing, and just begging to be customised to suit a variety of palates, so that’s exactly what we decided to do on our trip to Starbucks the other day.
While the options are endless when it comes to ordering your own customised beverage, we knew exactly the type of drink we wanted to create, and it was modelled on the Matcha S’more Frappuccino we fell in love with in 2018. So first off, we decided to take a good look at the two S’more varieties on their own and break them down into their component parts.

・Freeze-dried marshmallows
・Baked chocolate
・Graham crackers
・Bitter caramel sauce
・Milk
▼ Now, from the archives, our photo of the 2018 Matcha S’more Frappuccino.
This Frappuccino contains:
・Chocolate sauce
・Whipped cream
・Freeze-dried marshmallows
・Baked chocolate
・Graham crackers
・Matcha powder (1.5 times the usual amount)
・Non-fat milk
Looking at the components, the customisation hack became clear: the only real differences here were the caramel sauce/matcha powder and the full-fat/non-fat milk. Seeing as we wanted to create a caramel-flavoured Matcha S’more Frappuccino, we decided to ask the barista to make us a Caramel S’more Frappuccino with light syrup (one pump instead of the usual three) and non-fat milk.
We loved the 1.5-strength matcha levels of the Matcha S’more Frappuccino, and we really wanted to give this the same type of green tea flavour punch, so we decided to add that in ourselves, with a sachet-and-a-half of the Via Tea Essence Matcha Green Tea.
We poured the sachets into our Frappuccino…
And took a big spoonful to taste all the flavours together.
The first thing we noticed was that the matcha sachets contained sugar, so it was a good call to reduce the amount of caramel sauce, otherwise the drink would have been overly sweet. The matcha lifted the whole drink with its refreshing, bitter notes, muting the caramel sauce while melding perfectly with the chocolate, marshmallow, and graham crackers, to create an incredibly delicious combination that closely resembled our beloved Matcha S’more Frappuccino.
We highly recommend mixing the matcha sachet packets into the drink to ensure that you get a well-rounded dose of green tea flavour with every mouthful.
If you love matcha and s’mores, this is definitely the Frappuccino for you, so get in now and give the customisation hack a try, as the limited-edition beverage will only be available for a limited time, until 29 August.
