Catching our attention on the Harajuku street one early evening is this group of girls with their individual takes on streetwear dressing. They are Minakoand Nanako, and Miwa and Miyuu. Let’s take a closer look at their outfits:

At the far left is 17-year-old Miyuu, sporting twin fringed buns. She is wearing a blue-and-white long sleeve striped shirt, which she tucked into a black pleated skirt. White socks with green stripes, red high top sneakers from Converse, and a white crossbody bag with black contrast trims from Leftfield finished off her casual style. She’s on Instagram.

Next up is Miwa, sporting similar twin fringed buns. The 17-year-old is clad in a pink cropped Hide shirt with white trims, which she paired with cuffed denim overalls. She slipped into a pair of gold rhinestone sandals, accessorized with a rhinestone bracelet and colorful friendship bracelets, and rounded out her look with yellow sling bag with black contrast trims. Sporting an orange-and-red curly ponytail, 18-year-old Nanako is dressed in a blue t-shirt with black contrast trims, tucked into cuffed tan shorts and cinched with a houndstooth print grommet belt. Mismatched blue and purple socks, dark blue high top Converse sneakers, and a black Kipling sling bag with a gorilla keychain completed her look. Meanwhile, Minako stepped out on the street wearing a blue-and-white religious icon print button down shirt and a yellow plaid shorts with a skirt panel. 18-year-old Minako donned black socks with floral appliques, red high top sneakers from Converse, and a black sling bag with a grommet strap, sewn hem details and a black tassel completed her street style. She styled up her blonde hair with green highlights into twin buns, and accessorized with silver cross earrings, a rhinestone choker, a heart pendant necklace layered with a silver chain bracelet, a heart ring, and a pinkie ring. Introducing Roland, King of the Hosts: Top earner and most successful host club host in Tokyo

The best at encouraging clients to spend money, he rakes in as much as US$375,000 per month. 

Host Clubs are places where women can have some no-strings-attached fun with some hot guys. We’re not talking sexual fun, usually; we’re talking flirtatious fun and good company. Drop a little money on some liquor, and your host will entertain you with great conversations and a good time.

Naturally, hosts pride themselves on being excellent companions, because the more they are liked, the more they can get their patrons to spend at the club, and the more money they can make. Every so often one particular host becomes far and away the best at his job, so popular among the ladies that he achieves the title of King of the Hosts. A few years ago it was the handsome Naoki, but right now, it’s the charming Roland.

At just 26 years old, Roland is said to be the most successful host of Kabukicho, the area of Tokyo’s Shinjuku neighborhood with the highest concentration of host and hostess bars. He made his debut at the age of 18, and now manages one of the most popular host clubs in the area, Platina Club, where he has apparently doubled the annual earnings.

Roland is a master of seduction, and regularly gets his ladies to spend insane amounts of money without getting drunk himself. He only drinks the most expensive and the finest liquors, anyway, so anyone who wants to have his attentions must pay top dollar.

In fact, Roland holds the record for the most “sales” for a single day, month, and year. Apparently, on his birthday last year, patrons allegedly spent 10 million yen (more than US$88,000) on him in just three hours. Birthdays are, of course, when clients spend the most money on their favorite host, but Roland has also been able to rack up as much as 42 million yen in an ordinary month.

As such, Roland is said to be the highest-paid host in Kabukicho, and of course he uses that money to live a life of luxury. He apparently owns several expensive cars, including a Porsche, and wears only the most high-end clothes. He also lives out of hotels, not because he can’t afford a home, but because it ‘suits his lifestyle better’.

What makes him so successful? His charming personality and flirtatious behavior, of course, but as with many hosts his looks perhaps have the biggest effect on his popularity. He has naturally good looks and great style, and he spends hours at the gym every day to maintain his sexy physique.

He has also had cosmetic surgery, and he’s not ashamed to admit it. He’s spent around 10 million yen to make adjustments to his face, and says he spends about 200,000 yen ($1,800) to maintain it every month, and for good reason. His income apparently doubled after he got the procedures done!

His good looks have also earned him fame as well as fortune. He often appears on television and is featured in a regular segment on the YouTube channel Host TV. With his impeccable style and nice smile, it’s no surprise that he has been so successful.

I wonder how our own Mr. Sato and Go Hattori would compete with those numbers? Their pop-up Host Club Roketto for this year should be coming up soon, so we’ll have to wait and see!

A large number of men prefer women who are attracted to other women, study says

Apparently, men in China and the U.K. like women who tend to bat for both teams. 

Most people have specific laundry lists of qualities for their perfect partner. How tall you are, where you work, what body type you have, whether you pitch in around the house, and whether you have a romantic side or not can all determine how attractive you are to a man or woman, and how willing they might be to date or even marry you.

But now science has unearthed one more criteria that a lot of men might be looking for in a woman: being attracted to other women.

This was indicated by data found in a recent study at the University of Nicosia in Cyprus that sought to solve one of Evolutionary Psychology’s most puzzling questions: Why does same-sex attraction exist? 1,021 Chinese participants and 390 British participants were surveyed about their dating preferences, and the results were pretty clear that men like women who like women.

That was the answer given by one in four heterosexual Chinese men and two in three heterosexual British men, but with the added stipulation that they prefer women who are primarily attracted to men, with occasional interest in other women. If the men themselves had experience with same-sex attraction, they were even more likely to agree. And to top it off, they also said they preferred women who have had “sexual contact” with other women.

“This preference is probably one of the reasons why many women have evolved same-sex attraction in the first place,” said Menelaos Apostolou, one of the authors of the study, which was published in the Science Direct journal. It still doesn’t explain why male same-sex attraction occurs, because women didn’t seem to have the same inclinations about their male partners; men were 6.48 times more likely to prefer a partner with same-sex attraction than women.

But Apostolou also explains that, despite the evolutionary mystery, liking men, liking women, and being attracted to people who like both are just different types of sexual preferences among all people, and each one is totally normal. It’s the same as knowing what kind of hug you like the most or what kind of behaviors you find cool. So, ladies, if you’re having trouble finding a man, why not try to find another lady first?

Tokyo has a new manga library with beer, and it’s everything we want in life

With a beer in our left hand a shelf full of manga within reach of our right, we’re not sure why we should ever leave.

Japan’s cities are dotted with “manga cafes,” but these establishments deliver much more on the first half of their names than the second. Sure, they’re stocked with plenty of comics to read, but they’re cafes in the same way that Internet cafes are cafes, with pretty drab interiors and a bare-bones drink menu.

But Tokyo’s Manga Night Books is a genuine cafe with manga, or, if you prefer, a manga bar.

Located in Tokyo’s Bunkyo Ward, Manga Night is actually a very multifaceted place. It’s a manga specialty shop, but also a manga library with a large collection of comics that you can read for free. Then there’s the cafe aspect, with drinks and food, and finally Manga Night is also an art gallery, with rotating exhibits highlighting the works of manga luminaries.

After getting off the subway at Myogadani Station on the Marunouchi Line, we headed towards Manga Night. While its tastefully understated exterior quietly blends into the surrounding cityscape, as soon as we looked inside we knew we were in the right place.

Manga Night’s current exhibition is a salute to Takao Saito’s long-running hit man saga (and real estate muse) Golgo 13, and features some impressive full-color artwork of the series’ aliased star, Duke Togo.

In most manga stores in Japan, the comics are arranged by publisher, and within each publisher’s section they’re further sorted by the author’s name. Manga Night does things a little differently, though, with its books sorted by theme or some other shared characteristic.

When we stopped by, some of the groupings were seasonal autumn manga, manga with iconic school uniform designs, and manga which the Manga Night’s employees say changed their lives.

But like we said, this is a legitimate cafe, and so once you’re inside, your first stop should be the counter where you can order coffee, other soft drinks, and even craft beer! At night, the menu expands even further to include whiskey highballs and hors d’oeuvres.

In addition to manga for purchase, Manga Night has a large collection of comics that visitors can read for free as they sip their drinks. In general, the free-to-read manga are the first collected volumes of their series, but with so many series on offer, there’s no shortage of reading material.

Of course, given the highly visual nature of manga storytelling, the artwork is beautiful to pore over, even if you can’t read the text. With digital manga distribution becoming more and more common, we’ve gotten used to reading manga on our smartphone or PC screens, but our visit to Manga Night had us falling in love with the detail and charm printed-on-paper art all over again.

After picking out a drink and a manga, the next thing to do is to pick a seat. The counter spots are great if you’re looking to mingle with fellow manga fans, but if you’re looking for a place to quietly lose yourself in the art form…

…this is the seat you’ll want to snag, with an extra-cushy sofa-style chair tucked into a back corner. Once we settled in, we had a beer at our left hand, and a whole shelf of manga to read within arm’s reach to the right.

In other words, we were in paradise, and if it wasn’t for the fact that eventually Manga Night’s employees have to close up shop and go home for the night, we might still be sitting there, and we’re looking forward to going back again once the cafe/store/gallery has its official grand opening on October 2.

Three different styles, multiple, materials, and five different colors let you customize your look for cleaning your techno-dwelling.

Just before the start of summer, Japanese fashion label M Kikaku released its line of fairy tale heroine swimsuits, featuring nods to the stories of Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, and Little Red riding Hood. But with September winding down, it’s now too cold to hit the beach, and so M Kikaku is back again with another line of cute and sexy fashions.

The Cyber Maid outfit combines the 19th century style cues of the classic maid uniform with modern, techno-inspired lines and materials. The result is something that looks at once both traditional and futuristic.

To make the ensemble look even more cutting-edge, you have your choice of three different materials: satin, metallic material, or glossy enamel leather, which M Kikaku respectively describes as the “elegant,” “cyber,” and “fetish” options.

There are also three styles of skirt to select from. Pictured above it the billowy round skirt, but if you’d prefer something more form-fitting, there’s the tight miniskirt is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

And if you’re looking for more leg coverage, there’s also the tight long skirt.

But even those aren’t all the customization opportunities. If the standard black-and-white color scheme is a little too stereotypical for your tastes, the round skirt version is also available in red, blue, gold, and silver.

Even though M Kikaku designates the different Cyber Maid uniforms by their “skirt” type, they’re actually dresses, and can be worn without the connected collar/sleeves the models are seen posing in.

The dress and sleeves are bundled together for a price of 25,950 yen (US$234), while the dresses alone can be purchased for 13,950 yen. Orders can be placed here directly with M Kikaku, with delivery scheduled for late November.
