The cute cat that loves to ride to school on her hooman’s randoseru backpack every day 【Videos】

https://ift.tt/2bpKF65 SoraNews24

Turns out the Japanese randoseru school backpack is perfectly designed for cats to ride on.

Over the years, we’ve fallen in love with a lot of adorable Japanese kitties. But never before have we seen a cat that’s happy to ride to school on a child’s backpack.

Mee, however, is no ordinary kitty. She needs no encouragement to go to school with her older hooman brother every morning, even hopping up on his backpack without any prompting and balancing perfectly on his bag as he puts on his shoes.

This is one cat who wants to keep her brother company every morning. In fact, Mee looks totally comfortable on the randoseru, never attempting to jump off and simply gazing around at the scenery as the world goes by.

Two-year-old Mee has been heading out to school with her six-year-old human since she was little, and now that she’s bigger, it seems to have become a ritual that she’s not only used to, but looks forward to as well.

After all these years of the randoseru being used as the required backpack for elementary school children in Japan, and inspiring famous patissiers and celebrities like Zooey Deschanel, who knew it was actually the purr-fect perch for cats to ride on too?

While it’s not clear whether or not Mee makes it all the way to the school gate, she does at least accompany her human pal up the street, which is probably a safe and convenient place for her mother to step in and carry her back home again.

And considering how easy it is to drag your feet when you have to leave home for school or work, having an adventurous cat like Mee pushing you out the door is the motivation we all need to get out of the house on a dreary Monday morning!

Massive 120-meter Godzilla statue being built as part of Japanese theme park’s newest attraction

https://ift.tt/2oEADu5 Casey Baseel

If you’ve ever wanted to zip-line through the King of the Monsters or save Japan from one of his rampages, this is your new happiest place on earth.

Hyogo Prefecture’s Awaji Island doesn’t get a ton of visitors. It’s a pleasant enough place, but it just doesn’t have that many major attractions.

Soon, though, there’s going to be a very big reason to visit Awaji: a massive 120-meter-long (393-foot) Godzilla statue!

Nijigen no Mori (“2-D Forest”) is an amusement park that offers both outdoor activities, like obstacle courses, and anime-related fun, such as its Naruto AR game. The park has just announced that its newest creative partner is the King of the Monsters himself, and that it’s building a life-size replica of the upper body of Godzilla as he appears in 2016’s Shin Godzilla, the most recent Japanese-produced entry in the film franchise, directed by Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno.

The attraction, dubbed Godzilla Interception Operation Awaji, puts visitors in the role of members of the National Awaji Island Godzilla Research Center, or “National Awaji Island Institute of Godzilla Disaster,” to use its clunkier official English name. Don’t worry, though, you won’t be stuck running lab tests and sitting through droning lectures in a stuffy symposium. Instead, you’ll be drafted into an operation to lure Godzilla to Awaji Island, trap him under an explosive-triggered rockslide, and blast him with a cell-freezing substance. This, naturally, must be one of the most extreme methods possible: with zip-lining through the interior of Godzilla’s gargantuan body and firing a coagulant rifle into his hide all part of the comprehensive anti-kaiju plan.

▼ The attraction’s English-narration teaser video

▼ As demanded by Japanese society, there will also be a selection of exclusive Godzilla-themed food and merchandise.

The 5,000-square meter (53,820-square foot) Nijigen no Mori Godzilla zone is scheduled to open in summer of 2020. There’s no word as to whether or not Awaji City is going to extend the big guy the same courtesy Tokyo did in 2015 and give him official residency status.

We try the new Christmas Frappuccino from Starbucks Japan

https://ift.tt/34kKPqL Oona McGee

It looks like a Japanese Christmas cake, but does it really taste like one as well?

Now that Halloween is officially over, and Starbucks Japan’s Night Masquerade Party drinks have come to an end, it’s time to pass right by Thanksgiving and head straight towards Christmas. That’s because the coffeehouse chain has just released its very first festive offerings of the year, in the form of the Merry Strawberry Cake Frappuccino and the Merry Strawberry Cake Milk.

Our Frappuccino tester Masami was on the scene as soon as they were released to give us her expert report. She ordered the Frappuccino, but when she looked at the menu she saw there was another surprise drink on offer: the Gingerbread Latte. Unlike the Christmas cake drinks, which are brand new, the Gingerbread Latte has been a staple at Christmas over the years, and this year it appeared to have snuck its way onto the menu without any fanfare, so she purchased one of these as well.

Masami started the taste test proceedings with the Merry Strawberry Cake Frappuccino, which is said to look and taste just like a Japanese Christmas cake.

Before we go any further, Masami would like to remind everybody that Christmas cakes in Japan are actually strawberry shortcakes layered with cream and topped with strawberries, which play on the red-and-white colour theme of the festive holiday.

The Christmas cake Frappuccino is beautiful to look at, with its contents mimicking the layers of the actual cake. At the bottom of the drink is a layer of “sponge cake crumb”, made with a mixture of shortbread and finely crushed sponge cake, which is topped with a rich strawberry sauce containing fresh fruit pulp.

On top of everything is a mound of cream and crunchy strawberry pieces, designed to look just like the strawberries and cream on top of a Japanese Christmas cake.

According to Starbucks, this drink aims to recreate the moment you bite into a slice of Christmas cake, and as Masami dove in with her spoon, she couldn’t wait to find out what this experience would be like. She put a spoonful in her mouth, and was immediately dazzled by the drink. It was light and airy, and tasted strongly of sponge cake, and with the fruit flavours providing a refreshing finish, the beverage was neither too heavy nor too tart…it was just right.

Accompanying the Frappuccino is the Merry Strawberry Cake Milk, a beverage that’s said to taste like “eating a Christmas cake with a glass of hot milk”. However, as it contains the same ingredients as the Merry Strawberry Cake Frappuccino, Masami decided to give it a miss this time, instead choosing to soak her taste buds in the spicy essence of gingerbread with the Gingerbread Latte.

Warm and flavoursome, this latte has become the taste of Christmas for Masami, and this was definitely the first of many Gingerbread lattes she would enjoy this season.

The Merry Strawberry Cake Frappuccino is available in a tall size only for 590 yen (US$5.43), while the Merry Strawberry Cake Milk is sold in Short through to Venti sizes from 490-570 yen, and the Gingerbread Latte is available in Short through to Venti sizes from 460-590 yen. All prices are tax-exclusive.

Both new beverages will be available at Starbucks stores around the country from 1-21 November, while the Gingerbread Latte will be available until 25 December.
