Awesome Sega Mega Drive six-button controller taiyaki lets you bite into mouthful of nostalgia

Relive the old-school era of 16-bit while having your fill of delicious red bean paste.

If you were around during the time when entertainment company Sega released its flagship console, then spending countless hours in front of a TV with the Mega Drive (also called Genesis) would likely be a fond memory for you.

It may all be in the past now, but it is clearly not forgotten, as Sega has begun selling limited-edition taiyaki shaped to look like the Mega Drive controller pad and making us recall zipping through levels in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 or smashing faces in Streets of Rage 2.

▼ Each crispy pad-yaki costs 300 yen (US$2.80) and is filled with
sweet red bean paste or vanilla custard cream.

The pad-yaki was actually first introduced in the 2019 Tokyo Game Show as a yummy snack for attendees, but ended up garnering such a great response that it spurred Sega into making it available for everyone.

Also on offer is the Sega logo-yaki that has been around since last year, and indulging yourself with both treats is a great way to pay homage to one of the earliest consoles that helped shaped the gaming scene we all know today.

▼ We used to mash our fingers on them,
and now we can mash our teeth on them.

▼ Get these and more themed taiyaki at the fifth Sega arcade located in Akihabara.

The limited-edition pad-yaki is available until November 10, so head down there, try your luck at some UFO catcher games, and sink your teeth into a few delicious controller pads for old times’ sake.
