Muji Ginza’s freshly baked bread is our new favorite thing

Fresh bread at Muji for under 100 yen (US$0.91)? Insanity.

From fancy hotels to tiny houses, it seems Muji is a company that’s able to make anything and make it well. Gone are the days of Muji simply being a chain of stores that sold simple yet respectable-looking clothes, furniture, and miscellaneous products.

And yet we were still surprised to discover that a particular Muji in Ginza that opened last April has a bakery on the first floor. We knew that Muji sold some pretty good pre-packaged food, but fresh food? This was a first, and it only took one visit for us to get hooked.

▼ The intoxicating scent of fresh bread enveloped us as soon as those clean, glass Muji doors opened.

One bit of gossip we heard about Muji Bakery in Ginza is that the people who shop here tend to buy their products in large amounts, so it’s important to pay attention to what time products will hit the shelves.

▼ Fortunately, there’s a sign outside the bakery that tells you when freshly baked goods will be available!

The bakery offers an array of popular bakery staples such as tsubuan bread (or “sweet red bean paste” bread) for 180 yen (US$1.64), curry bread for 200 yen, and condensed milk cream bread for 250 yen.

▼ They also have classics like croissants and plain rolls.

We aimed for the plain roll bread, which is priced at an extremely affordable 90 yen. Despite its low price, we are now addicted to its soft and slightly sweet taste, especially when seasoned with just the right amount of salt.

▼ We can totally understand why people buy these in bulk.

One thing we also tried this time around was the condensed milk cream bread. It has a sweet, creamy filling with rum raisins inside that we think anyone would enjoy.

▼ Don’t let the name fool you; this bread is one of the more popular as well.

Our only criticism of the Muji Bakery in Ginza: make more bakeries! And maybe a shuttle bus to take us there.

▼ Don’t save all that goodness just for Ginza.

We recommend sampling the whole lot or just go with your gut and buy a bunch of everything. You won’t regret it.
